The Elkhorn
Slough Reserve needs your help
to cover basic needs. And the Elkhorn Slough Foundation will match
your gift as part of a campaign to raise $20,000 for the
Reserve.
The Reserve has always
operated on a modest budget from the state Department of Fish
and Game and with great volunteer support. Due to state
budget problems, the Reserve has no operating budget. Now
every expenditure must be approved at the state level and
only "emergency" requests are approved.

Some
of the 10,000 school children who visit the Reserve
each year line up to use the scopes at the overlook.
Here are some of the
things the Reserve needs to spend money on but which don't
qualify as emergencies.
- Buying gravel for
roads, straw for erosion control, and sandbags for levy protection
$3,700.
- Buying light bulbs
for the Visitor Center and printing new Trail Maps $1,600.
- Replacing broken
microscopes and computer equipment used by the 10,000 students
who use the Reserve each year $10,000.
These problems
are not just "Reserve problems," they are Elkhorn Slough
problems and I hope you will join in the effort to help
solve them.
You can help meet these basic needs by becoming a Friend
of the Reserve. When you become a Reserve Friend, the Elkhorn
Slough Foundation will double your contribution. (Click here
to become a Friend of the Reserve online.)
By becoming a Friend
of the Reserve, you will not only help the Reserve cope with
the state's budget crunch you will also become a member
of the Elkhorn Slough Foundation. As a member of the Elkhorn Slough
Foundation you will receive our quarterly newsletter. You will
also be entitled to a 10% discount at the Visitor Center Bookstore
and be invited to special walks on lands owned by the Foundation
that are not open to the public.
We all know the state budget is in crisis. Here at the Reserve
that means that basic operating needs are being unmet. Together
we can do something about that. I hope you will join in our campaign
today by becoming a Friend
of the Reserve.
Sincerely,
Mark Silberstein
Executive Director
Elkhorn Slough Foundation.
