The Coast Live Oak is an evergreen native to the California Coast. It grows primarily in the coast ranges from southern Mendocino County to Baja California, mostly below 3,000 feet. It is a dense, full-canopied tree commonly 25 to 100 feet tall, and may grow to 130 feet wide. Coast live oaks often exceed 250 years in age. Acorns have a high food value; they have a high water, fiber and fat content. The name Quercus agrifolia (Coast Live Oak), quer- meaning "fine" and cuez- meaning "tree," and agrifolia meaing "live foliage" is the hybridized Latin and Celtic word for the oak genus.
