A few words from
the Artist... A FEW WORDS ABOUT
ELKHORN SLOUGH
. Elkhorn Slough is my
backyard and I feel so blessed! I fell in "love at first
sight" in 1988 when seeing the Slough for the first time
while volunteering for a stint as docent. I recall the power
of its impact as I stood at the overlook at sunset after a
March storm. So complete was the love that I convinced my
husband that a home in the area was necessary, and in 1993
we moved to our beautiful spot, a landscape painters
dream. I have been
watercoloring the area since 1988 and oil painting it since
1996. My primary interest and focus is plein air painting. I
want to bring my love affair with Elkhorn Slough to canvas
and awaken joy and appreciation in the viewer. Painting is like a
meditation as I attend completely to the subject as I paint.
I try to capture the elements that intrigue me and recreate
them so others can enjoy them too. It surprises me to see my
own canvas transform into a painting. It's so messy a
process and frustrating too - my production isn't always
what I hope or expect, but I do respect that it is the way
Creativity comes through me. There are times I wonder, "why
do I paint?" But mostly now, I just do it. Elkhorn Slough is
continually challenging and inspiring. Someone once told me
that artists are the visual recorders of history. I hope we
can expand that role to include being protectors and
preservers of our beautiful natural resources too. I feel
honored to have the Elkhorn Slough as my neighbor. I work to
protect and preserve it for all of us. My hope is that my
paintings will bring an appreciation of its beauty into your
home too, and you will join with me in the protection and
preservation of this unique treasure.
