"Elkhorn Slough is a
magical place. It has a subtle kind of magic, perhaps too
subtle for eyes and ears grown accustomed to the blaring
sounds and sights of urban life - the addicting and
demanding glitz of television; the musical soundtracks and
information that follow us everywhere - in our cars, in our
homes, and in the workplace; and the instant access of the
internet. But to stand on the
edge of the slough in the early morning, before the fog
lifts much, listening to the much quieter sounds of calling
and paddling birds, the splash of a fish or a bird diving
for breakfast, enveloped by the mist that shrouds and
disguises the signs of humanity that surround the slough, is
to be transported to another time. That kind of peace, that
kind of subtle quiet, is too seldom with us." -
