Mary Warshaw

A few words from
the Artist... I have been painting
the landscape of Elkhorn Slough for twenty years, sometimes
in oil and sometimes in watercolor. It is fascinating to
respond to this ever changing landscape. Not only is there
dramatic seasonal change, but tides and skies seem never to
repeat themselves, nor hold still for even a short session.
Despite the inconveniences of weather and change, I prefer
to work on site rather than from phtographs because I feel I
paint more fully in the larger context of this incredible
place. These paintings are almost like meditations: I start
by messing around, checking my paints and brushes, and
disposing of my anxieties and diurnal concerns. Once plunged
into paint and concerned with sight and problem solving, I
find myself emerging several hours later full of the scene
and back enough in the world to become critical of the work
and ready to eat. My watercolors are usually completed in
one session, but an oil painting requires many days on site
and then I fishish it in my studio.
