5/1/06: This week, Red-legged Frog by Jack MacDonald. This shot was taken in June of 2005 at one of the Elkhorn Slough Reserve's wildlife guzzlers, just before Cattail Swale on the South Marsh Loop Trail. The equipment was a Canon 20D digital SLR using a Canon lens EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM @ 400, f/5.6, 1/250, ISO 400.
Jack is retired and enjoys photography as a hobby. The Elkhorn Slough is one of his favorite areas for wildlife.
The California red-legged frog has been protected as a threatened species by the Endangered Species Act since June 1996. This frog once ranged across much of California, including portions of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, where it is believed to be the title character of Mark Twain’s famed short story, “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” |
