Red-shouldered Hawk

Red-shoudered hawks (Buteo lineatus) are sometimes more often heard than seen at the slough – their distinct “ky-er, ky-er” cry is a great way to help identify this raptor. When they are not hunting (which they often do as you see here, perched on high), they tend to stay inside the canopy of a tree, out of sight. This one is a frequent visitor to a power line not far from the Visitor Center.
