Sea Otters

Sea Otters are one of the most popular attractions at the Elkhorn Slough. The Elkhorn Slough hosts one of the largest populations of Sea Otters along the California coast.

Nearly hunted to extinction for their fur, Otters are slowly making a come back. They have very thick, water resistant fur to keep them warm. Constantly grooming themselves ensures that their fur is water resistant.

Here at Elkhorn Slough, Sea Otters eat the large clams that live in the mud. The gaper clam is a favorite meal of Sea Otters at the Slough. Otters relax on their backs, floating with the tides down the waters of the Slough. They can be seen in the main channel of the Slough almost any day of the year, especially near the mouth of the Slough at Moss Landing.
