Volunteer at Sand Hill Farm – December 9, 2017
Volunteer Days at  Sand Hill Farm
Planting Acorns
Saturday, December 9
9 am – 12 pm
Meet at Sand Hill Farm, 1111 Elkorn Road. 9-12 PM. Bad weather cancels
Volunteers wanted! We are undertaking a major reforestation effort on the steep slopes of Sand Hill Farm, planting oak acorns where erosion gullies and abandoned agricultural infrastructure once was. Join us for a morning of revitalization as we transform this property. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Accompanied youth are welcome. This event will occur rain or shine, severe weather cancels. Please note that the terrain is steep and sandy and the work is moderately physical.
The 107-acre Sand Hill Farm is a critical piece of the puzzle to ensure the health of the Elkhorn Slough. Perched above the slough, this land was conventionally farmed for decades. Over time the steep, sandy hillsides eroded and deposited sediment in to the waterway. Now, Elkhorn Slough Foundation staff and volunteers have removed thousands of pounds of agricultural trash and healed deep erosion scars and it’s time for native plants to reclaim this land, creating habitat for wildlife.
Directions and details will be sent just prior to the event.
All volunteers must register in advance

Elkhorn Slough is an ecological treasure at the heart of Monterey Bay. It provides much-needed habitat for hundreds of species of plants, animals and birds. The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Elkhorn Slough Foundation work with government, community agencies and other partners to protect this precious and scarce environment.
