Kayaking the Slough
9/25/06

In early September the Elkhorn Slough Foundation hosted its first of three
fall kayaking tours in the north Slough. These annual events are a perfect
way for our members to experience the true beauty of the place they are
protecting.

This tour was guided by Monterey Bay Kayaks and launched from Kirby Park. Because our members came with differing levels of kayaking skills our MBK guides started us off with a beginners course. Once the paddling skills were in place we had a practice run minus the water.

Though the wind was up when we launched, it soon died down leaving our group to leisurely paddle the calm waters. Brown pelicans were out fishing while godwits picked through the mud looking for a few tasty morsels. Even an otter was spotted enjoying the splendid sunshine. Overall it was a relaxing way to spend a perfect fall afternoon.

If you would like to sign up for one of our remaining two kayaking tours, please call Michelle at 728-5939. Spaces are limited so call as soon as possible to secure spot.
