Earth Day–
the Elkhorn Slough Foundation Way, Part 2
6/11/07

On April 21, 2007, Earth Day, the Elkhorn Slough Foundation sponsored a local trash clean up event. Kris Beall, Ken Collins, Kim Hayes and 22 awesome volunteers met at Kirby Park for a few fun hours making a difference on planet Earth. Of the volunteers, nearly half were kids! We cleaned up two sites: Kirby Park and Blohm Road (in Las Lomas).

1280 pounds of illegally dumped trash were collected, including:
16 tires
2 baby strollers
2 baby walkers
1 boat trailer
1 couch
1 mattress
automotive parts: an engine, an alternator, a master cylinder, many quarts of used motor oil
4 carpet pieces
numerous bags of black drip irrigation tape

We separated out 4 bags of miscellaneous recyclable materials as well.

Thanks to the Monterey Regional Waste Management District for providing us with waivers for the landfill. Also, thanks to local Margie Kay for donating trash bags, plastic gloves and for her inspiration!
