ESF Transfers Lands to DFG
2/1/08

Recently, the Elkhorn Slough Foundation purchased two properties, totaling 30 acres, slated for transfer to the Department of Fish and Game. We are proud to report that the first transfer is complete. A three acre parcel of mature Oak woodland along Strawberry Road in the Elkhorn Highlands will now become part of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. It provides an important upland buffer to the Reserve wetlands and valuable habitat for a variety of upland plants and animals.

In addition, the transfer of the larger 27 acre parcel is on track for completion early this spring. This property will be incorporated into the Moss Landing Wildlife Area along Highway 1. Its habitat includes tidal salt marsh, tide flats, grassland and an upland cypress grove. The Foundation purchased the land from the Giberson family last year to secure it for the Wildlife Area. It provides rich habitat for a variety of land and shorebirds and is a good addition to the Moss Landing Wildlife Area.
