Fungus Foray 2003

February 2003: On a clear and brisk Saturday morning, a group of devoted mycophiles assembled in the Visitor Center conference room to hunt for mushrooms and other fungi of interest at the third annual Fungus Foray. On the following pages you will see several of the three dozen species we collected that day in the oak understory and grasslands of the Elkhorn Slough Reserve.

Guides Phil Carpenter (left) and Ken Sommers led the group in search of fleshy fungi to put in their collecting baskets. These we took back to the Visitor Center to identify. Phil is extolling the virtues (delicious) and dangers (some folks are alergic) of the Shaggy Parasol (Macrolepiota rachodes).
