History of Elkhorn Slough

<-- previous next -->

1900s – Around the turn of the century, the Vierra family dikes a large area of wetlands for harvesting salt (aerial photo). Evaporation concentrates the brine in a series of ponds (salinas means "salt ponds"), finally drying it to a salt. Workers harvest the salt with shovels and wheelbarrows.

A windmill pumps saltwater brine between the evaporation pools.
