Job Description:
The Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR) is one of 27 Reserves across the country working in a State/Federal partnership for the stewardship of estuaries. The Scientific Aid will work under the supervision of a lead person to assist professional staff in a variety of technical and routine tasks related to Department of Fish and Game and Aquatic Education activities. The position will support ESNERR’s mission to improve the understanding and stewardship of Elkhorn Slough and its watershed. This includes support of Reserve efforts to enhance the public’s understanding of water resources and aquatic life, and to facilitate the development of responsible attitudes toward the aquatic environment.
Work Week: Monday – Friday, 8:30 to 5:00. Occasional weekend and evening work will be required.
Term of Employment: 3/4 time through June 30, 2008, with possible extension; starting immediately contingent upon budgetary approval.
Wage: Scientific Aid $11.58/hour
Typical Tasks Include to:
- Assist in the development and implementation of interpretive, research and education program material on estuarine, freshwater, oak woodland and grass land habitats of the Reserve.
- Work with Visitor Center staff to provide the public with accurate information relating to projects conducted at ESNERR.
- Assist in the collection of field data, as needed.
- Work with staff and volunteers in supporting daily operations of the Visitor Center.
- Respond to public inquiries via phone, email or in person. Maintain and coordinate the scheduling and use of ESNERR’s conference rooms and meeting spaces.
- Copy, collate, and distribute material, packets, mailings.
- Monitor and maintain program files, supplies and equipment.
- Update and distribute staff information, organizational charts, and other timely materials.
- Coordinate and maintain common program work areas, and bulletin boards.
- Perform other duties supporting ESNERR goals as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Scientific Aid – Equivalent to completion of two years of college with a Minimum of 10 semester hours in biological science.
Possession of a valid California driver’s license required.
Knowledge and Abilities:
Applicants must be able to read and write English and do simple arithmetic computations; have an aptitude and willingness to perform simple clerical work; maintain a neat personal appearance; follow directions; perform intermediate computer word processing; be competent in the use of Excel and Word computer programs; organize work and reason logically; be flexible; work as part of a team; have a positive attitude and good people skills; and have an appreciation of the ESNERR mission.
