Project Manager

The mission of the Elkhorn Slough Foundation, a non-profit land trust, is to conserve and restore the Elkhorn Slough estuary and its watershed.
The Mission of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve is to ensure the perpetual health of ecosystems in Elkhorn Slough and the surrounding watershed through preservation, restoration, research, information exchange and education with particular emphasis on the Research Reserve.
Summary: The Elkhorn Slough Foundation is currently seeking a skilled project manager to support the Elkhorn Slough Tidal Wetland Project, an initiative led by the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve. The Project Manager will work independently under the guidance of the Tidal Wetland Project Director, to conduct duties including project management, contractor oversight, preparation of documents and reports, and meeting facilitation. This is a full-time position with benefits, with a salary range of $45,000 to $52,000. Exceptional candidates interested in part-time work are also invited to apply (see details below).
The Project Manger will be engaged in an array of activities that advance the Elkhorn Slough Tidal Wetland Project, which involves over 100 decision-makers, resource managers, stakeholders and scientists in developing and implementing restoration strategies for a 2600-acre estuary and its watershed (http://www.elkhornslough.org/tidalwetlandproject/). The main focus of this position is to implement the strategies outlined in the Elkhorn Slough Tidal Wetland Strategic Plan (http://www.elkhornslough.org/tidalwetland/strategic_plan.htm).
Primary Responsibilities:
(1) Project Management – 50%
- Track budgets and project future expenditures.
- Organize and edit documents such as project planning reports, grant applications and progress reports.
- Identify and gather the elements needed to secure regulatory agency permits to implement restoration activities.
- Supervise the work of consultants, interns and volunteers, and collaborate with partners and staff to ensure the timely delivery of high quality work products.
- Organize speakers and materials for meetings.
- Make scientific information generated by experts in various disciplines accessible and informative for resource management decision-makers.
(2) Working Group Facilitation and Stakeholder Involvement - 25%
- Assist in the facilitation of meetings of coastal resource managers, scientific and restoration experts, representatives from key regulatory and jurisdictional entities, leaders of conservation organizations, and community members.
- Work with key stakeholders to gather input about and build support for potential restoration projects.
(3) Grant Writing – 20%
- Investigate and pursue funding opportunities for restoration, research and monitoring, and permitting activities. This includes reviewing requests for proposals, prioritizing opportunities, developing timelines, editing and compiling grant proposals and communicating with appropriate funding organizations and agencies about the project.
(4) General – 5%
- Participate in coordinated program initiatives of the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve and the Elkhorn Slough Foundation.
Required Qualifications:
- B.A./B.S. or advanced degree in science, management, policy, or engineering.
- Five years of professional experience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals with varied backgrounds and interests.
- Excellent organizational skills including the ability to track and sustain progress on parallel projects with varied collaborators.
- Strong leadership skills including the ability to conduct and lead productive meetings and projects.
- Experience motivating others to produce high quality work on time.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working on complex projects.
- Desire to conserve and restore California’s wetlands.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience, training and certification in project management.
- Experience negotiating contracts.
- Experience in wetland and estuarine ecology and restoration.
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal wetland permitting processes and experience working with key wetland regulatory agencies in California.
Compensation:
This position will be offered either as a full-time position (40 hours per week) with benefits or as a part-time position (24 hours per week) without benefits. Full-time status is preferred, but part-time status will be considered for exceptional candidates. The full time salary range is $45,000 to $52,000 per year, commensurate with education and professional experience. Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance, and option to participate in a 403(b) retirement plan. This position is grant funded for 12 months, with potential for continued funding.
