Wandering Pond Turtle

photos by Greg Hofmann

03/31/03: This Pacific Pond Turtle (Clemmys marmorata) was observed on the South Marsh Loop trail near the granary trees, heading away from the Rookery Pond. There is a well-established population of pond purtles in the Rookery Pond (inset below), so this individual may have been looking for new habitat. This one eventually made it to Cattail Swale. The clawed feet make it clear that pond turtles are well-adapted to land, and take overland travel in stride.
