Swallow Work-out

06/02/03: It seems that the widespread bird housekeeping is paying off. This juvenile Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) is resting its wings after a short test flight over the South Slough Loop Trail. The juvenile is almost full size, but its quick flights and extended perches – so different from the energetic acrobatics of the adults as they hunt flying insects – was the clue to its age.
