This young
barn owl fell from its nestbox in the large barn and was unable
to fly back up. Visitors found it in poor condition and alerted
staff, who brought it to the Visitor Center. The head-lowered
posture is used in threat situations.

An expert
in wildlife rescue, Reserve
staffer Tricia Wilson eases the owlet from its traveling box
for a feeding. In the tray on the table is a syringe filled
with hydrating solution (water, sugar, salt) and two baby mice
(purchased as food) that will be its meal.
Lunch is served! This owlet recovered well and was returned
to its nestbox a few days later.
