Photographer’s Day Book

July 6, 2003

Onshore winds created large mats of By the Wind Sailors (Velella velella) on the beach north of Moss Landing. This jelly, like the Portuguese Man-of-War, uses an upright sail to propel it through the water.

Here's what one of these dried jellies looks like up close...

...and here they are under sail in better days.

The pocket gophers have been busy with home improvements lately.

A juvenile weasel paid a visit to the parking lot this morning...

...and was kind enough to pose – briefly! – for a portrait.
