A Silken Parlor

10/6/03: This vivid yellow garden spider (Argiope sp.) has decorated the plants near the Visitor Center with a fine orb web. The central patch in the web is called a stabilimenta (because it is thought to help stabilize the web). Only the females grow this big – the males are tiny.
