Photographer’s Day Book

Above is a short "movie" of something I've seen only in the lagoons of Elkhorn Slough: Brown Pelicans feeding in shallow water. Instead of using their usual headlong dive into the water from several meters up, when they find a school of fish in shallow water they glide low and splash in horizontally. Above they are hunting in the lagoons of the north marsh, and below is more of the same a few minutes later. You can see the birds in just about every aspect – taking off, gliding, splashing down, drawing their heads out of the water – somewhere in these photos.
