A Long-billed Curlew comes to feed in the mud of the Rookery Lagoon (note the shadow and reflection both).

Got to be some good worms and crustaceans somewhere around here.

Curlews are able to feed more deeply than any other shorebird in the slough thanks to their especially long bills. Different shorebird species feed at different depths in the mud, many using their tongues to feel for food items.

But the probing is not all at depth – here's some surface technique.

On to the next morsel.
