Sponge Island

photos by Greg Hofmann

3/8/2004: Have you ever seen Sponge Island on the Reserve? It makes a brief appearance at low tide, just east of the footbridge on the South Marsh Loop Trail. This orange sponge is an invasive species (Hymeniacidon sinapium) that was first described from Atlantic oyster reefs. It was likely introduced to the slough with commercial oyster culturing.
