Mothra?

3/15/2004: This Noctuid moth, an Alfalfa Looper, is shown larger than life-size, fortunately – wingtip to outstretched wingtip, it measures about and inch and a half. The graphic pattern on its front set of wings is so dramatic that it's noted in its genus name, Autographa californica (and thanks to Susie Fork for the ID). Most Noctuid moths are, as you might guess, nocturnal, but this individual was out and about at mid-day.
