Photographer’s Day Book
photos by Greg Hofmann

April 9, 2004

You've already seen that the Tree Swallows returned some weeks ago. Now it's the Cliff Swallows' day in the sun – they're back and busy starting new mud nests in the eaves of the garage building.

Every morning is a frenzy of activity.

After they're done with the morning's building they'll go hunting for food.

If you have a high-speed internet connection (or sufficient patience), you can watch the swallows at work. (Get the free Quicktime Player here.)

Here are the nests a few days after the above photos were taken. They're about half done; when the gourds are complete there will be just a small hole for the doorway.
