This Anise Swallowtail (Papilio
zelicaon) is taking a break, not on its namesake plant,
Anise (or Sweet Fennel), but on a patch of pickleweed,
the signature plant of the Elkhorn Slough saltmarsh. Because Fennel
thrives in disturbed areas (vacant lots, margins of ag fields),
that's where you'll find these butterflies.
