Glimpses into the natural history of Elkhorn Slough
photos by Greg Hofmann

August 18, 2004

This Northern Fulmar was brought to the Reserve for some rapid rehabilitation. It was found in the water near Moss Landing beach in very bad shape. Its plumage is still a mess, but the bird has been dried out and warmed up with a heating pad under its box.

Our on-staff expert Tricia Wilson once again rides to the rescue and hydrates the bird. The fulmar was later taken to Native Animal Rescue in Santa Cruz and is still doing fine.

The same afternoon, a Redtailed Hawk that had been rescued and rehabilitated by the SPCA was brought to the Reserve to be released. There's always something going on at the slough.
