2/14/2005: A member of the Lily family, Sessile Trillium (Trillium chloropetalum var. giganteum – "sessile" means the flowers are stalkless) is already in bloom on the Reserve. Peterson's Field Guide to Wildflowers says the flowering season is April-June. Perhaps the mild winter of the central coast has fooled the plant (also called "toadshade" and "giant wakerobin") into early bloom. Click here for a closer look at a single flower in a new window.
