August 12, 2005 - bug weather

As mentioned previously, Seaside Heliotrope is reputed to be a butterfly magnet. This looks like our old friend the Acmon Blue.

But butterflies are not the only insects that have discovered these flowers.

Here's another view of a Cardinal Meadowhawk.

While we're on the subject, here's another shot at my quest for a decent photo of a flying dragonfly. This looks like a species we've seen before.

One more butterfly, a Grey Hairstreak. The swallowtails at the back of the wings act as fake antennae, to go with the eyespots – both serve to deceive predators, luring them to attack the wrong end of the butterfly.
