9/6/2005: This two-foot snake puzzled me when I encountered it on the Five Fingers Loop – I'd never seen such a red snake on the Reserve before. It turns out this is our old friend the Gopher Snake. They exhibit quite a range of coloration in the "ladder" along the back – compare this one, which has a more familiar brown cast.
