Diatoms

Diatoms are microscopic plants that are found in water. They are part of the phytoplankton, or free-floating plant life that make up the base of the food chain. They produce their own food, just like terrestrial plants, through photosynthesis. What is really unique about these creatures is that they construct and live inside glass houses or outer shells made of silica.
