Elkhorn
Slough has been designated as a Globally Important Bird Area
The Elkhorn
Slough Foundation is pleased to announce that Elkhorn Slough has
been designated as a Globally Important Bird Area. The American
Bird Conservancy, under its Important Bird Area Program, has highlighted
the Elkhorn Slough because of the significant breeding and wintering
populations of threatened Western Snowy Plover and the significant
concentrations of migrant and wintering shorebirds.
Under
this program, hundreds of volunteers and other conservation groups
seek to identify and enhance protection for the most important
sites for birds conservation across the United States. This designation
will help the Elkhorn Slough Foundation further conserve and restore
the Elkhorn Slough, habitat to threatened birds, such as the Western
Snowy Plover, and other important birds which utilize Elkhorn
Slough for nesting and feeding.
