The California Department of Fish and Wildlife, NOAA and the Elkhorn Slough Foundation work together in partnership sharing the common mission to conserve, protect and restore the Elkhorn Slough and its watershed.

Job Description:

The Elkhorn Slough Coastal Training Program at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve (ESNERR) is dedicated to creating educational programs for professionals involved in natural resources management. Through these programs, we bring together decision makers including experts in policy, land management and science to foster dialogue, build community and improve the central coast’s environment. With significant development pressures on coastal communities it is imperative that these decision makers have sound information on which to base their decisions. The NERR system has established the Coastal Training Program to address the information and technology needs through training and education programs at the local level. The Elkhorn Slough Coastal Training Program Coordinator will design and implement this training and outreach program for the Monterey Bay Region at the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Under the supervision of the Reserve Manager, the Coastal Training Program Coordinator is responsible for designing, implementing and managing the comprehensive Coastal Training Program for ESNERR. Successful applicants will have strong presentation, administrative and organizational skills, and a strong background in natural resource management. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Develop, market and implement a range of educational activities (workshops, forums, field trips, etc.) and materials (printed, electronic, web-based, etc.) to address priority issues, target audiences, and perceived training needs that exist in the region as determined by systematic needs assessment.
  • Develop and implement periodic program evaluations and utilize this data to direct CTP program strategy.
  • Create and maintain informational files, images, and databases as necessary for program development. Prepare reports for local, regional, and system-wide distribution.
  • Initiate, develop and submit educational/training grants and develop related reports.
  • Chair an established program advisory committee which includes local community leaders for the purposes of program direction and evaluation.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with members of the scientific, management, non-profit, and environmental education communities to ensure accurate, easily understandable translation and transfer of information and data to decision makers.
  • Manage and maintain the CTP program budget and develop program budget projections. Manage funds in a fiscally responsible manner to meet achieve program goals.
  • Responsible for allocating and managing funding, including a portion of a Reserve wide NOAA grant and various other resources.
  • Remain current on relevant scientific and social science research.
  • Develop and implement a promotional strategy for CTP workshops and events, including appropriate use of press, radio, TV and web-based media formats in coordination with NERR and CDFW guidelines.
  • Provide program updates and information for the CTP web page on the ESNERR/ESF website.
  • Manage and maintain CTP website keeping it up to date with current program information.
  • Participate in NERR system-wide activities and national meetings; liaison with other CTP coordinators and programs at other NERR sites. Participate in establishing national CTP priorities.
  • Supervise staff and presenters. (Number of staff members varies) in support of Coastal Training Programs; develop work plans and provide mentoring.
  • Participate in update and development of the Reserve Management Plan.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree with from an accredited institution in natural or social sciences or environmental planning, with advanced coursework in these areas of study and four years of experience in related field and/or meeting facilitation.
    Or
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in natural or social sciences or environmental planning
  • Ability to effectively understand, translate, and communicate complex scientific information.
  • Four years or equivalent work experience in coastal resource management, wetland science, environmental policy, environmental science/studies, or relevant social science fields.
  • Four + years of progressively responsible administrative experience, working in office and advanced organizational skills.
  • Significant knowledge of natural resource topics and issues and ability to effectively work with diverse interests in settings with multiple outcome goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to be a professional, effective team member and leader.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word and Outlook) and database management software and systems.
  • Ability to plan and facilitate meetings, develop and maintain networks, develop and implement training events.
  • Ability to identify and engage experts in order to develop relevant topics pertinent to coastal decision makers and develop relevant training programs.
  • Must hold a valid California Drivers license and have a good driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving experience.

This is a full time position and is dependent upon grant funding.
