Seasonal/Scientific Aid Job Bulletin

Position: Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid (2 positions)

Program: Central Region, Elkhorn Slough Ecological Reserve

RPA #: CR 17-133, CR 17-134

Location: Royal Oaks, Monterey County

Salary Range: $12.59 – 14.93 per hour

Hours: Seasonal, part-time, 24-32 hours per week.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of college with 10 semester units in biology or other natural resource related studies
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license

Desired Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Interest in fisheries and aquatic research and restoration
  • Comprehension of wildlife science and conservation practices
  • Familiarity with ecological and/or fisheries management principles
  • Strong organizational and data management skills
  • Willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends and holidays, and wear a uniform
  • Good driving record

Duties: Research and Education: Assist in the development and implementation of interpretive, research and education program material for estuarine, freshwater, oak woodland and grassland habitats. Work with Visitor Center staff to provide the public with accurate information on the research, restoration and education projects conducted at Elkhorn Slough Ecological Reserve. Interact with Reserve volunteers and assist in providing guidance in the development of volunteer, research and education programs. Maintain field notes generated by Reserve visitors.

Laboratory Operations: Assist in collecting and preparing scientific specimens for use in the teaching lab. Identify and interpret the life history of a variety of invertebrates as part of the Reserve education program. Assist in the operation and maintenance of microscopes and other lab equipment.

Administration: Copy, collate, and distribute materials, packets and mailings. Monitor and maintain program files, supplies and equipment. Perform other duties supporting Reserve goals as needed.
