Lands We Protect

Preserving and restoring the Elkhorn Slough watershed

Where We Work

We preserve irreplaceable natural areas, restore degraded properties, and enhance agricultural sustainability. To learn more, click through the highlighted properties in the interactive map below, or visit Brothers Ranch, Elkhorn Highlands Reserve, Kirby Park, Porter Ranch, Sand Hill Farm, Tottino, or Triple M Ranch.

Land Stewardship Goals

We operate in a vibrant working landscape and seek to balance environmental, economic, and community benefits.

The Monterey Bay area is a hotspot of global biodiversity, and our lands help protect plants and animals that occur nowhere else on Earth. Our lands range from tidal marsh along the slough edge all the way up to maritime chaparral covering rocky hills overlooking the entire bay, providing critical open space for plants and animals to move with the tides and the seasons.

Through our management of this network of properties surrounding Elkhorn Slough, we have significantly improved water quality, decreased groundwater overdraft, restored huge swaths of habitat, planted thousands of trees, and removed incredible amounts of trash.

Elkhorn Slough Habitats

This interactive habitat map displays vegetation types throughout the Elkhorn Slough watershed.

Data and maps such as these help ESF prioritize land acquisitions, plan for habitat restoration, and provide context for the work we do. The map is available for scientists, teachers, students, and the general public to explore and use for their own projects.

How You Can Participate

Periodically, we offer hikes, tours, and other special events for Elkhorn Slough Foundation members. We also provide numerous opportunities for volunteers to work with us on the land—planting native plants, removing invasive species, and more. You’ll have a great time building community while helping to restore Elkhorn Slough!
