Ecotone Invasion and Restoration

A. Woolfolk and K. Wasson, with assistance from N. D'Amore, K. Hayes, A. Morrow, and S. Fork, are investigating the dynamics of the marsh-upland ecotone. We have set up 60 permanent markers around the Slough to determine whether the ecotone is being compressed or pushed downwards in areas where invasive upland vegetation dominates above the marsh.

To experimentally determine competitive abilities and physiological tolerances of native and non-native plants in the upper marsh zone, we are carrying out a transplant experiment. We also have carried out experimental restoration of the ecotone, removing iceplant from above the marsh and replacing it with native rushes and creeping wild rye.
