The Elkhorn Slough Rookery

About The Rookery Cam

The camera was installed in February 2000 before the birds started nesting in the trees. This timing was important so as not to disturb the birds. A tree climber ventured up one of the stronger Monterey Pines in the rookery to install the initial hardware. The camera was suspended from a sturdy galvanized pipe strapped to the tree in a position that offered a dramatic view of the nests. The camera could be lowered for maintenance and raised back up into the tree by personnel on the ground.

How it Works
The camera was mounted in a tree in the Rookery and sent a signal to a relay at the Reserve's barn, then across the Slough to Montery Bay Kayaks, where the signal was transmitted via a T1 line to the Web and the world.

The camera, housing (including a windshield wiper to keep the housing window clean), and remote control system was developed and installed by See More Wildlife. http://www.seemorewildlife.com
