Hello,

Welcome to the first monthly email for the Elkhorn Slough Tidal Wetland
Project (TWP)!

1) Thank you for Getting Involved with TWP
We’d like to say a belated “thank you” to all of you who were able to attend our Community Forum last April. Based on the evaluation responses of attendees, we have decided to plan additional opportunities for you to learn about marsh loss in Elkhorn Slough. Opportunities to learn more will include a community tour of the Slough (see below), these monthly updates, and an upcoming Community Forum. To learn more about last April’s Community Forum, go to http://www.elkhornslough.org/tidalwetland/forums.htm.

2) Community Walking Tour on Saturday, December 2nd from 2-3:30 pm
Have you heard about marsh loss and bank erosion at Elkhorn Slough but aren’t really sure what that means or looks like? Then join fellow community members on an educational walking tour of the wetlands of Elkhorn Slough’s Kirby Park. During this leisurely walk, we will learn how this natural area has changed over the years and what current efforts are underway to keep the Slough healthy for all those who rely on it. Don’t miss this opportunity to see for yourself what’s happening in the Slough! Space is limited so please RSVP to barb@elkhornslough.org or at (831) 728-2822 x308. More information will be posted soon at http://www.elkhornslough.org/tidalwetlandproject.

3) Virtual E-Tour Through Elkhorn Slough’s Tidal Wetlands
If you can’t attend the Community Walking Tour, then take a virtual tour of Elkhorn Slough’s tidal wetlands. We have started adding information and photos about different areas within the Slough on the Tidal Wetland Project website pages. Check it out.

4) Modeling Restoration Alternatives for the Slough
The Elkhorn Slough Reserve, through the Elkhorn Slough Foundation, put out an RFP (request for proposals) in August to solicit a consulting team to evaluate potential restoration alternatives to protect the Slough’s marshes. We received five excellent proposals and are currently in the process of choosing a consulting team for the project. The models and evaluations rendered by the chosen consultants will enable a decision to be made about how to pursue large-scale restoration of Elkhorn Slough. To learn more about the RFP, go to http://www.elkhornslough.org/tidalwetlandproject.

5) EPA Awards Grant for Elkhorn Slough
This past July, the California Coastal Conservancy was awarded $200,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop restoration plans for Parsons Slough, a 415-acre wetland area in the southeastern section of Elkhorn Slough. For more information, go to http://www.elkhornslough.org/tidalwetland/twpnews.htm.

The Tidal Wetland Project’s monthly email will be sent out during the middle of each month and is intended to keep community members, local organizations, policy-makers, and other stakeholders up-to-date about current activities and ways to get involved with the Tidal Wetland Project. If you have any questions about items in this email or if you have suggestions of items you would like to see in future emails, please let us know! If you do not wish to receive these emails in the future, or if you only want to receive e-mail updates about upcoming Forums and events, please reply to this email to notify us.

Kind Regards,
The Tidal Wetland Project Team
